Fine Art // Live Event Painting

A live event painting is a custom work of art painted by an artist right there at the special event, all as the action is unfolding.  The most captured events include large birthday parties, bar/bat mitzvahs, family reunions, corporate events and of course, weddings!

While hiring a live event painter to capture a special wedding scene is really popular with couples right now, you don't need to feel like you're just following the trend if you choose to have a live event painter. Each event is still a wholly unique experience and your wedding isn't going to be like everyone else's wedding. Plus, it's a really fun form of 'experiential entertainment' that keeps guests enthralled and amused when they're not dancing the night away!

We’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the artistic talent of Joan Zylkin, a terrific live event painter based in Philadelphia, at weddings we’ve filmed at the Crystal Tea Room in the city, the Ashford Estate in Allentown, New Jersey and at Congress Hall in Cape May, and found her work to be quite fascinating.

And J. Howard Studios wowed the crowd at Amanda and Jeff's wedding reception at the glamorous Hotel du Pont in Wilmington, Delaware. You can see her there in the background capturing the scene in a photo as the couple danced their first dance, and she worked through the party to recreate the image on canvas.

Most live event painters employ similar techniques in order to capture the wedding day in paint.  They will arrive at the wedding location often 3-4 hours before the start of the event and begin to paint the venue, whether it be the inside of a ballroom or the scenic landscape of an outdoor ceremony or reception.  During the event itself, he or she will spend several hours adding the newlyweds, guests and additional details into the scene.  And many will even finish the painting before the end of the reception and present it to the couple before they leave.

As with all art, of course no two hand-painted works are alike.  The level of detail captured and general artistic style is unique to each artist.  Also, the size of the paintings offered and the mediums differ… some paint in oils on canvas and others paint in watercolors.  Each finished product is a one of a kind creation, wonderful for displaying at home and passing down from generation to generation.

Having a live event painting is certainly an extraordinary way to capture a scene from your wedding event for posterity.  And a personalized painting would be such a wonderful addition to your own professional wedding photos and film. But not only is the painting a beautiful personalized keepsake, the process of creation really is a great form of entertainment for guests as they get to watch the painting’s progression during the wedding event.

Remember watching Bob Ross paint those “happy little trees” and “fluffy white clouds” on The Joy of Painting?  The show was successful not really because viewers tuned in to learn and practice painting techniques, but because people loved to watch as a blank canvas became a recognizable landscape bit by bit on each show.  It’s enjoyable and really quite mesmerizing to watch a scene come alive and grow right in front of your eyes.  A wedding reception scene being painted onsite is a sure way to fascinate many of your wedding guests and have them talking about it long afterwards.

What if you love this idea but your wedding has already come and gone?  Many live event painters will be happy to paint a scene from your wedding at a later date using one or more favorite photographs from your wedding.  When commissioned on a smaller scale, paintings based on your wedding photos of you with those who had important roles in your wedding also make fantastic thank you gifts!
